The Author
Roland Schimmelpfennig
was born in Göttingen in 1967, Roland Schimmelpfennig is one of the most
produced playwrights in Germany. He has written 16 plays which have been
translated into 20 different languages. After a lengthy engagement as a journalist
in Istanbul, Schimmelpfennig studied directing at the Otto-Falkenburg-
Schule in Munich. He was an assistant director at the Munich Kammerspiele
and became a member of the theater's artistic staff in 1995. He began working
as a freelance author in 1996. He spent a year in the United States in
1988, where he worked as a translator. In the same year, he received the
Schiller Memorial prize. He worked as a dramaturg at the Schaubühne in
Berlin from 1999 to 2001 and was playwright in residence at the Deutsche
Schauspielhaus in Hamburg during the 2001/ 2002 season. Since 2000 he
has been working on numerous commissions from the Staatstheater
Stuttgart and Hannover, the Burgtheater Vienna, Schauspielhause Zürich
and the Deutsches Theater in Berlin, among others. He lives in Berlin.
